November 17, 2008 - Joanne Aaronson - Enlightened Leadership - Pathway to Success



This one-hour program presents the case for a needed paradigm shift in corporate America today, defined by the qualities of Enlightened Leadership. The negative forces at play are described, together with ways in which these forces can be countered by the positive forces of Enlightened Leadership. Successful leaders understand how to use self-empowerment and their own inner wisdom and maximized creativity as facilitators of success. Biography

Joanne Aaronson, PMP, has a degree in physics and post-graduate certification in technology management. Combined with over 20 years of project/program management experience in both the public and private sectors, she has used her techniques to successfully bring in projects on time and within budget both nationally and internationally. Ms. Aaronson is the recipient of several industry awards for excellence in project management.

Joanne has been a frequent speaker at Project Management Institute (PMI) programs, and members of her audience have declared her presentations as "awesome" and an "amazing combination of concise, to-the-point, yet exciting material". Her full-day Enlightened Leadership Workshop was extremely well received. October 20, 2008 - Ray Siguenza: Alignment of PMBoK to BABoK for Improved Requirements

Ray Siguenza is a business process senior manager at Freddie Mac, responsible for the advocacy of business process best practices at an enterprise level. Such activities currently include the definition, alignment, deployment and maintenance of PM practices to the SDLC, Centers of Excellence (COEs), Training and Resource Management practices. Previously, Ray held positions of Director, Program Manager, Project Manager and Team Lead for companies such as Aurora Biometrics, COMSYS, MCI, Grumman, Comprehensive Technologies International and SpaceCom.

The focus of this presentation is the alignment of the PMBoK and BABoK activities for the purpose of defining and managing "value based" requirements for a project. Project Managers and Business Analysts are enablers of change. Project Managers manage the resources that deliver the change, whereas Business Analysts scope out what is of most value to the organization. The growing focus is that it's time for a change. Out with the old 29% successful project results (2004 Standish Chaos report) and In with focus on "right value" to the organization. PMBoK is the framework for Project Managers and BABoK is the framework for Business Analysts. As silos, they net ambiguous results. Aligned, they net successful projects (satisfied customers), improved team morale, and effective career growth.

Biography

Mr. Ray Siguenza has over 26 years of experience in the delivery of mission-based solutions, the deployment of Centers of Excellence (COE), and Business Process Management. He has managed deployment of large mission-critical improvements for both government (NASA, DoVA, NAVY, FBI) and private sector agencies, and is an advocate of value-based business practices (such as IIBA, Six Sigma and COEs). He has deployed and led COEs, authored repeatable processes and aligned silo practices into end-to-end value streams. Ray is the newly-elected IIBA-DC President and a Senior Manager for Business Process at Freddie Mac. He also provides mentoring and consulting services on the deployment of COEs and Practice/Process Deployment/Documentation (adapted from a biography of Ray Siguenza on the Data Management Association website).

September 22, 2008 - Ervin Reeves: Business Process Management and Project Management

Ervin Reeves serves as Senior Enterprise Architect for the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management (SAF/FM). He is a Certified Enterprise Architect and a Certified Information Security Manager. Mr. Reeves has over 25 years of experience designing and developing IT systems for both commercial and government clients. Before accepting his current position with the SAF/FM, he served as Senior Enterprise Architect for the Air National Guard, after a period of service as Chief Architect for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Mr. Reeves serves on the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Information Assurance Working Group in support of the DoD Network Centric Warfare Initiative. Mr. Reeves is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Information Assurance at the University of Fairfax.

Mr. Reeves will discuss what skills are required of Project Managers responsible for managing a Business Process Project. Included will be a discussion of skills required of Project Managers to better understand the business processes, as well as lessons learned and best practices needed to ensure BPM project success. Business Process teams benefit from team leaders who are experienced project managers. Moreover, given the widespread corporate interest in BPM, there are significant opportunities for project managers who are familiar with process redesign to help their companies. Managers who want to be effective in the years ahead will want to master the basics of both BPM and project management.

Bio - Jim Litchko

James P. Litchko, CISSP, CAS, is a senior information systems security author and strategic advisor, with over twenty-five years experience assessing and developing information technology (IT) security solutions. He has held senior executive positions and advised executives at several of the largest commercial IT security companies. During his twenty-year Navy career as a surface warfare and cryptographic officer, he led efforts supporting military actions in the Atlantic, Pacific, European, Mediterranean, African, and Middle East Theaters of Operations. His last five years in the Navy were in staff and technical positions at the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Computer Security Center (NCSC), where he was Staff Chief for the Director. Since 1988, he has been an instructor for computer and network security at Johns Hopkins University, the MIS Training Institute, and the National Cryptologic School. Jim, a professional member of the National Speakers Association, has been a keynote speaker, presenter, and facilitator at over 30 events a year. He has provided IT security presentations to Congressional staffs, Gartner Group, Conference Board, Canadian Embassy and Communications Security Establishment, Price Waterhouse, Merck, Exxon, Freddie Mac, Cambridge University, University of Mexico, SANS Institute, Computer Security Institute, Defense Intelligence University, and National Defense University. He has served on several government-sponsored IT security working groups and was the past Chair of the ASIS International IT Security Council. Jim holds a Master's degree in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University. He has authored or co-authored the following books: KNOW Your Life, KNOW IT Security, KNOW Cyber Risk, and Cyber Threat Levels Response Handbook. With 30 years of experience as a program manager, Jim will augment his rules on performance management with real-world stories.

Overview:

Project Managers are the vital link in the diversity process, and often determine its success or failure. In order to be successful in meeting the company's business goals, project managers must be equipped with an action-oriented set of skills to maximize employee interaction, engagement and creativity. People managers must completely understand the process of diversity and inclusion, as well as the importance of leveraging the talents available due to that diversity. They must understand how to attract, engage, develop and retain talented individuals from all cultural backgrounds. Probably most important is the ability to create a culturally-inclusive workplace that is vital, innovative, engaging, and empowering.

Melissa Davies

Melissa Davies has a B. Ed. (Honors) from the University of Victoria. In support of her continuing education strategy, she has completed additional courses covering such topics as Educational Change, Positive Classroom Discipline and Instruction, Six-Hat Thinking, Co-operative Learning, and Standards-Based Education. Ms. Davies has broad-based experience in educating persons of all ages, with a special emphasis on promoting multi-skill development. In addition, she has devoted considerable personal time toward mentoring and coaching youth in academics, leadership and social responsibility.

Melissa served for six years on the Professional Development Advisory Council for the British Columbia Teachers' Foundation. That council was responsible for the collaborative planning, development, and implementation of effective models of teaching and professional development delivery for the province of British Columbia.

Overview:

The development of communication skills is integral for successful teamwork and interpersonal relationships in the work environment. This presentation will cover techniques needed to make group decisions and resolve internal team conflicts, and it will illustrate how to negotiate effectively with outside parties.

Concepts and tools will be presented to help the project manager understand and manage teams and work groups. The attendees will be provided with knowledge to be effective contributors in any team, group or organization, with the ability to achieve goals in complex and dynamic organizational settings.

Bala Ramamurthy

Bala Ramamurthy is a certified Project Management Professional with over 10 years experience in the IT / project management field. Mr. Ramamurthy played an important part on the Catapult CMMI Level 3 Effort team, contributing to the implementation of institutional policies of CMMI within the development team and assisting Catapult's 2005 CMMI Evaluation and Level 3 assessment certification. Currently, he supports the Hazmat Intelligence Portal (HIP) project, a program that provides oversight of the hazardous materials industry. Mr. Ramamurthy is team-driven and focused on creating cohesive and efficient teams.

The topic of Baseline Change Control covers five of the thirty-two guidelines for an Earned Value Management System from the ANSI-748A standard. This presentation is designed to provide a foundation in Baseline Change Control, with practical examples, starting with no knowledge of the Earned Value Management Standard (ANSI - 748A). Knowledge of the requirements for baseline change control, knowing a few best practices, and understanding how it aligns with other project management activities can prove invaluable as a project manager leads the robust application of Earned Value for a project.

John Wintermute, PMP

John Wintermute has 30 years of experience in IT Projects, the last half of which have been as a project manager. These projects have included many high profile system development efforts including the 511 traveler information system (http://www.511.org/) for the San Francisco Metropolitan Transportation Commission. The 511 project won the ITS America award for Best New Product in 2004. John also managed the ground-breaking Information Exchange Network project for the I-95 Corridor Coalition which won the ITS America award for Systems Interoperability in 1998.

John achieved his initial PM certification by Parsons Brinckerhoff in 1996 through a combination of in-house training and an evaluation of PM performance. John spent six years as an instructor for the in-house PM training at Parsons Brinckerhoff and four years as the PM Training Officer for a subsidiary company. After joining the USDA in 2004, John completed PMP certification.

John has developed and delivered training on many Project Management, Information Technology, and Software Development topics for in-house training programs and for customers. John collaborated on the development and delivery of the FHWA-sponsored course on Regional Communications Protocols under contract to the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE).

John is currently managing IT projects for the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA). He has recently started development of a series of training modules on Earned Value Management and related Capital Planning topics. These modules will be specifically focused on IT Projects in US Government civilian agencies. The first module in that series, "Baseline Change Control for Earned Value", is scheduled for delivery in May of 2008.

Please join us on April 21, 2008 to welcome Gustavo A. Calderon as our guest speaker at the upcoming M2D2 presentation in April. The presentation explains the key tenets behind OMB Circulars and FAR Clauses requiring the use of EVM. Mr. Calderon addresses which types of projects are well suited for EVM performance measurement, and which ones are not. He highlights the basic requirements and compliance issues surrounding the adoption of the ANSI/EIA 748-B Standard. EVMS reciprocity is also discussed.

Jim is currently a Project Manager for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Training and Development in the Course Management and Development Branch. He is responsible for overseeing the design and development of instructor-led, web-based, and scenario-based training courses. Jim has over two decades of experience in managing diverse training and software development projects at major U.S. companies, including Inference Corporation, America Online, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Wang Laboratories..

This presentation is a primer on training for Project Managers without a background in education or educational theory. The presentation will cover the importance of individual stakeholder perspectives, meeting stakeholder needs while maintaining educationally-sound and legally-defensible training, and delivering training when it is needed.

Alan E. Feinberg

Alan Feinberg (BS Tufts University, MS University of Southern California) has spent the bulk of his distinguished 32-year government career as a program manager.

From 1975 to 1982, Alan 'apprenticed' at various government agencies, learning the skills needed to become a highly successful professional manager.

At the Naval Air Systems Command (1982-1998), Alan headed a 300-person program team with a $500 million annual budget that acquired all the ground support equipment used by Naval and Marine Corps aviation personnel to test, maintain, repair, and support both fixed and rotary aircraft ashore and at sea. In this capacity, Alan earned the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award, a Navy Unit Commendation, a Department of Defense Value Engineering Management Award, and a Department of Navy Acquisition Improvement Award.

In November 1998, Alan transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to head the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) product team. STARS, with an estimated life cycle cost of nearly $2 billion, is the prime element of the FAA's Terminal Air Traffic Control System modernization program. Under Alan's guidance, a once troubled program gained a new life; the team successfully commissioned the first full system at an operational site (Philadelphia) on schedule in 2003. For this, Alan was honored with an FAA Acquisition Award for contributing to the efficiency of the National Air Space.

After a field detail in Seattle, Washington and a number of short term Headquarters assignments, in 2004, Alan became the Senior Safety Engineer for the FAA's Office of Terminal Services. In this role, Alan is responsible for implementing the internationally recognized Safety Management System within the FAA's Terminal domain. This is a national program that will take five years to complete.

Alan and his wife Gay, an art teacher, have been married for 28 years and have 3 children: Cheryl and Beth, both school teachers (and both engaged to be married next year!!) , and Daniel, a student at the Cornell University School of Law .

Alan is eagerly looking forward to the spring when he can start playing softball again.
